Some people come to church and pray fervently until they receive their miracles, then their commitment to God begins to wane. Some even turn the very blessing God gives them into an excuse for neglecting His service. For instance, a dedicated church worker who God blesses with a dream job may start skipping church services – or stop attending altogether – claiming that the demands of work leave him or her exhausted and that Sunday mornings are now reserved for rest. Such a person is indirectly telling God to take the job away if He wants him or her to remain committed to serving Him.
Many years ago, a guest preacher from the USA paused his sermon at the RCCG headquarters and said to a man in the congregation, “The Lord said that if you will serve Him, He will make you a millionaire.” In those days, the naira was more valuable than the dollar, and so, becoming a millionaire in naira was a big deal. At the time, the man, his wife, and their five children were living in a one-room apartment in Mushin, a suburb in Lagos. Within six months, the prophecy came to pass. The man became very wealthy, and shortly after, we stopped seeing him in church. Every time we followed up with him, he would say, “Oh, Sunday is usually the best time to see my business partners. That is the only day they are usually relaxed.” One day, I heard that he had a heart attack. When I saw him, he narrated the ordeal that led to the heart attack. He had gotten a contract worth approximately 100 million naira from the Federal Government and had sourced the necessary funds to execute it; however, just two weeks before he was scheduled to be paid, the contract was suddenly cancelled. I told him not to worry and that God only wanted to draw him back to Him. I then prayed for him and assured him that the contract would not be given to anyone else. Eventually, the contract was restored to him, and God also healed him. Sadly, this man still did not return to God, and his latter end was worse than his former.
Beloved, God indeed blesses those who diligently seek Him (); however, to remain blessed, you must stay committed to him. Today’s Bible reading clearly states that it is those who delight in the law of God and continue to meditate on it day and night that will be blessed.
