Several years ago, a young man popularly known as ‘Brother Sam’ was on fire for God, and God used him mightily for great exploits in His Kingdom. Brother Sam was uneducated and could hardly form a correct sentence in English, but he was filled with the Holy Spirit. At the time, there was a record of at least three people whom God used him to raise from the dead. He was so full of the Holy Spirit that when he was invited to preach at a teachers’ training college at one time, he told himself, “When I get there, I will tell them that I can't speak English, so they will have to get an interpreter for me.” However, when he got there and was handed a microphone, as he was about to say, “I'm sorry I can't speak English,” flawless English began to flow from his lips, and he preached for an hour in perfect Queen's English. He couldn't understand what he was saying, but he suddenly saw that, at a certain point, people began to rush forward because he was giving an altar call in English language. God did so many great things through Brother Sam, but unfortunately, pride entered into his heart. At a point, whenever he was invited for Bible study, he would ask who would be teaching and would say, “How many dead people has he raised for me to listen to him?” He eventually ended up in a lunatic asylum because he allowed pride to take him away from the covering of the Almighty.
Pride causes people to focus on themselves and leads them to believe they are superior to others. It destroys those who succumb to it (), and as we see in today’s Bible reading, God resists the proud. If a man resists you, you can plead with God to change his heart and grant you favour before him. Also, if satan resists you, you can stand on your authority as a Christian to stop his operations in your life. However, if God resists you, to whom will you turn? This is why you must shun pride.
Today’s memory verse tells us that the fear of the Lord is to hate evil. Then, it proceeds to describe that evil as pride and arrogance. Beloved, shun pride and clothe yourself with humility so God can promote you in due season ().
