YOUR FATHER’S BLESSINGS

Memory Verse

The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren.

Message

And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed: Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine:

In the Scripture above, Isaac blessed Jacob after the latter presented a meal to him. He said, “I will eat of my son's venison, that my soul may bless thee…” (). Even though the blessings were originally not intended for him, they could not be reversed. A father’s blessings over a child are not mere words; they give the child direction, prosperity, and divine favour.

There is a saying that anyone who has a father will go far because the fellow can climb on his or her father’s shoulders and see further. Beloved, if your biological father is still alive, I admonish you today to do everything you can, so long as it's godly, to get his blessings. At least once a year, do something that will provoke your father to say ‘God bless you’.

It is also important to receive the blessings of one’s spiritual father. If there is someone God has placed over you as a spiritual father, make sure you do things that will spur him to bless you. One of the things you can do is honour him in all ramifications. In , Elisha received the mantle of his spiritual father, Elijah, through commitment, submission, and service. In , Joshua, a man who had served Moses for years, received the spirit of wisdom because the latter laid his hands on him.

Beyond obtaining your biological and spiritual father’s blessings, you also need the blessings of other fathers. If there is someone in your industry who has gone ahead of you and achieved what you are striving for, get the fellow to bless you, especially if he or she is a believer. In today’s Bible reading, Saul blessed David before allowing him to set off to fight Goliath. He said, “Go, and the LORD be with thee.” That blessing was from the man sitting on the throne to the one who would be the next to sit on it.

Beloved, your father’s blessings can open doors that labour cannot. Ensure that you attract your father’s blessings at all times.

Key Point

Honour your fathers (biological and spiritual) so that their blessings can rest upon you.

Title: GUIDE ME, O THOU GREAT JEHOVAH!

1. Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah!
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but Thou art mighty,
Hold me with Thy powerful hand:
Bread of heaven! Bread of heaven!
Feed me now and evermore (2ce)

2. Open Thou the crystal fountain,
Whence the healing stream doth flow:
Let the fiery, cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through:
Strong deliverer! strong deliverer!
Be Thou still my strength and shield (2ce)

3. If I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside:
Bear me through the swelling torrent,
Land me safe on Canaan’s side:
Songs of praises! songs of praises!
I will ever give to Thee (2ce)

4. Saviour, come! We long to see Thee,
Long to dwell with Thee above;
And to know in full communion,
All the sweetness of Thy love.
Come, Lord Jesus! Come, Lord Jesus!
Take Thy waiting people home (2ce)
